What Is It?

Hinze Dam, situated in Advancetown, is the primary drinking water supply for the Gold Coast region. Originally constructed in 1976, the dam underwent significant upgrades in 1989 and 2011, which doubled its capacity and enhanced flood mitigation.

The 2011 upgrade introduced a variety of recreational facilities, including an interpretive information centre, the View Café, walking and biking tracks, horse trails, lakeside parks, and barbecue areas.

The tranquil environment and stunning vistas, especially from the café, make Hinze Dam an ideal spot for relaxation. The expansive spaces and interpretive centre offer engaging experiences for visitors of all ages.

The dam features a 3-kilometre walk and bike path across the dam wall, complete with informative signage about the dam’s structure, local flora, and fauna. Amenities include picnic tables, shelters, toilets, and barbecues.

For boating enthusiasts, electric-powered vessels, sail craft, and paddle craft are permitted on the dam. There are two boat ramps: the Eastern Boat Ramp (accessible via Range Road) and the Western Boat Ramp (via Nerang-Murwillumbah Road). Please note that activities such as water skiing, jet skiing, wakeboarding, and tubing are not allowed.

How Do I Get There?

Hinze Dam is located at 100-120 Advancetown Road, Advancetown, on the Gold Coast. It’s about a 15-kilometre drive southwest of Nerang.

What Should I Bring?

It’s advisable to bring ample drinking water, a picnic lunch (while tables are available, a blanket can enhance your experience), sturdy footwear, and sunscreen. If you prefer to dine on-site, the View Café operates Monday to Friday from 9 am to 5 pm, and on weekends from 8 am to 5 pm.

Please be aware that dogs are not permitted at Hinze Dam. Additionally, swimming is strongly discouraged.
